Replacing Critical Cooling Infrastructure for Higher Energy Efficiency.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

A major q.beyond data center in Hamburg required replacement of ageing cooling infrastructure. The project established the technical and energy-performance basis for a high-efficiency chiller retrofit, supported the associated funding process and extended through post-installation verification.

Project Description

01 — CONTEXT & INVESTMENT CHALLENGE

Critical Cooling Must Combine Efficiency with Operational Reliability.

q.beyond AG is a German IT service provider operating high-availability data centers that provide critical digital infrastructure services.

At its Hamburg data center, ageing cooling equipment required renewal. Continuous cooling demand and high availability requirements meant that energy performance had to be considered alongside the operational requirements of the facility.

02 — TECHNICAL SCOPE & KEY MEASURES

Matching New Cooling Infrastructure to the Data Center’s Requirements.

The project centred on replacing the existing chiller with a high-efficiency system designed around the data center’s specific load profile and operating conditions.

The technical assessment compared the existing and proposed cooling configurations and established the expected improvement in energy efficiency.

03 — INVESTMENT APPROACH

Establishing the Energy-Performance Basis for the Investment.

An Energy Efficiency Concept translated the proposed infrastructure renewal into a structured technical and energy-performance assessment.

The concept documented the expected efficiency improvement and provided the technical basis for the investment’s application under Germany’s Wettbewerb Energieeffizienz funding programme.

04 — INVESTMENT CASE & OUTCOME

Extending the Assessment Through Post-Installation Verification.

Following approval and installation, the engagement continued with verification of the implemented measure and its compliance with the requirements of the approved funding.

This connected the original Energy Efficiency Concept with the infrastructure ultimately installed, providing continuity from pre-investment assessment through implementation verification.

05 — ROLE OF WINFRIED HAAS

Independent Assessment from Energy Concept to Verification.

Winfried Haas delivered the engagement as an independent Energy Consultant and authorised Energy Efficiency Expert.

His responsibility covered the Energy Efficiency Concept, technical assessment of the chiller retrofit, expert documentation for the funding application, coordination with the relevant authorities and post-installation verification.

06 — RELEVANCE FOR OWNERS TODAY

Infrastructure Renewal Creates a Strategic Decision Point.

When critical cooling infrastructure reaches renewal, owners can reassess energy performance, operating requirements and lifecycle implications rather than simply replacing existing equipment like-for-like.

FROM PROJECT EXPERIENCE TO OWNER-SIDE ADVISORY

This project predates the current HAAS Perspective advisory business and reflects Winfried Haas’s earlier technical and investment experience. Today, HAAS Perspective provides independent owner-side advisory for major asset renewal and Net Zero transformation — from Investment Pathway evaluation through delivery assurance to performance validation.
