01 — CONTEXT & INVESTMENT CHALLENGE
Renewing Critical Power Infrastructure with Higher Energy Efficiency.
NorthC operates data center infrastructure across multiple European markets. At its Nuremberg and Munich facilities, existing UPS systems required renewal and presented an opportunity to improve the energy performance of critical electrical infrastructure.
For data centers, UPS systems need to support high levels of power availability while operating continuously across changing load conditions.
The project therefore combined necessary infrastructure renewal with the assessment of a more energy-efficient UPS configuration and the requirements of Germany’s Wettbewerb Energieeffizienz programme.
02 — TECHNICAL SCOPE & KEY MEASURES
Replacing Ageing UPS Systems with High-Efficiency Infrastructure.
The technical scope centred on replacement of the existing UPS systems at both data centers with new high-efficiency units.
The Energy Efficiency Concept assessed the planned renewal from an energy-performance perspective and established the technical basis required for the funding application.
The focus remained on improving the efficiency of the critical power infrastructure while maintaining the operational requirements of the data center environment.
03 — INVESTMENT APPROACH
Establishing the Technical Basis for the Retrofit and Funding Process.
The planned UPS renewal was translated into a structured Energy Efficiency Concept covering the existing infrastructure, proposed replacement and expected improvement in energy performance.
The resulting Expert Report established the technical basis for the funding application under Wettbewerb Energieeffizienz.
The assignment continued through communication with the relevant authorities and the subsequent documentation required following implementation.
04 — INVESTMENT CASE & OUTCOME
High-Efficiency UPS Infrastructure Implemented at Both Sites.
The existing UPS systems were replaced with high-efficiency units at the Nuremberg and Munich data centers.
Following implementation, the assignment included verification of the correct use of the approved funding, providing continuity from the pre-investment Energy Efficiency Concept through installation and post-implementation funding verification.
The project therefore connected critical infrastructure renewal with improved energy efficiency across two operational data center sites.
05 — ROLE OF WINFRIED HAAS
Energy Efficiency Advisory from Concept Through Verification.
Winfried Haas was responsible for the energy-efficiency advisory work supporting the UPS renewal at both data centers.
His responsibilities included development of the Energy Efficiency Concept, preparation of the Expert Report for the funding application, communication with the relevant authorities and post-installation verification of the correct use of the approved funding.
06 — RELEVANCE FOR OWNERS TODAY
Infrastructure Renewal Creates an Opportunity to Reassess Energy Performance.
When critical electrical infrastructure reaches renewal, owners can evaluate energy performance alongside operational requirements rather than simply replacing existing equipment like-for-like.
FROM PROJECT EXPERIENCE TO OWNER-SIDE ADVISORY
This project predates the current HAAS Perspective advisory business and reflects Winfried Haas’s earlier technical and energy-efficiency experience. Today, HAAS Perspective provides independent owner-side advisory for major asset renewal and Net Zero transformation — from Investment Pathway evaluation through delivery assurance to performance validation.
